RESUMO

This review offers a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, fate, and ecological risk associated with six major categories of antibiotics found in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China. Further exploration includes examining the correlation between antibiotic residual rates in the effluents and process parameters of urban WWTPs across the country. Lastly, a nationwide and urban cluster-specific evaluation of the ecological risk posed by antibiotics in WWTPs is conducted. The findings reveal that the average concentrations of antibiotics in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban WWTPs in China are 786.2 ng/L, 311.2 ng/L, and 186.8 µg/kg, respectively. Among the detected antibiotics, 42% exhibit moderate to high ecological risk in the effluent, with ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, azithromycin, and tetracycline posing moderate to high ecological risks in sludge. The current biological treatment processes in WWTPs demonstrate inefficacy in removing antibiotics. Hence, there is a pressing need to develop and integrate innovative technologies, such as advanced oxidation processes. This review aims to offer a more comprehensive understanding and identify priority antibiotics for control to effectively manage antibiotic pollution within WWTPs at both national and regional levels.

RESUMO

This study examined the seasonal and diurnal variations in soil respiration rates (RS) during a growing season at the treeline ecotone (2,800 m) and the lower distribution limit (1,600 m) of subalpine forests on a volcanic mountain in Japan. The aboveground biomass, the total RS during the growing season, and the RS per day during the growing season were lower at 2,800 m than those at 1,600 m. Seasonal RS variations positively correlated with those of soil and air temperatures at both elevations, and this tendency was more apparent at 1,600 m than 2,800 m. The mean volumetric soil water content (WS) during the growing season was much lower at 2,800 m than 1,600 m because of the scoria substrate at 2,800 m. The monthly mean diel cycle of RS was positively correlated with the soil temperature at each elevation every month, whereas that at 1,600 m was negatively correlated with that of the WS. The RS at 2,800 m decreased during the daytime especially in August, despite no changes in the WS. The decrease in RS after precipitation at 1,600 m was higher than that at 2,800 m. Seasonal and diurnal RS variations could be reproduced from soil and air temperatures, and WS. Estimating soil respiration rate from these variables will help understand the future carbon budget of forests due to global warming.

RESUMO

Croup, also known as laryngotracheobronchitis, frequently leads to blockages in the upper respiratory tract in young children, presenting symptoms, such as a raspy voice, a distinctive cough, and noisy breathing during inhalation. Despite being a condition that often resolves on its own, it puts considerable strain on healthcare resources due to regular doctor visits, emergency room usage, and occasional hospital stays. Research focused on larger populations suggests that only a small percentage of children with croup end up requiring hospital admission for their condition. In line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, we executed a meticulous systematic review by scouring databases, such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Library. A total of 10 articles met our inclusion criteria and were selected for in-depth analysis. These scholarly works provided substantive insights into the pharmacological agents deployed in the treatment of croup. From a clinical standpoint, the management of croup is highly contingent on the patient's hemodynamic status. Our review discerned a pronounced preference for corticosteroids as the primary therapeutic intervention over other alternatives, which are largely relegated to second-line or emergency applications. Interestingly, we found negligible differences among the various corticosteroid treatment options in terms of statistical significance, underscoring their broad utility in ameliorating the condition. In addition to corticosteroids, our review also explored other therapeutic options, such as heliox, nebulized adrenaline, and even natural interventions, such as exposure to outdoor cold air. The efficacy of these treatments demonstrated variable results, reinforcing the notion that while they may be useful in specific circumstances, they are not universally applicable or as robustly effective as corticosteroids. Given the preponderance of evidence favoring corticosteroids, further research is warranted to solidify their status as the first-line treatment in different medical settings, be it inpatient hospitals, outpatient clinics, or even for home-based care. Such studies will not only add a layer of confidence in current medical practice but could also potentially optimize treatment protocols, contributing to improved patient outcomes. Therefore, advancing our understanding of the effectiveness of corticosteroids as the cornerstone of croup management remains an area of paramount scientific and clinical importance.

RESUMO

The oviduct of the Chinese brown frog (Rana dybowskii) expands in prehibernation rather than in prespawning, which is one of the physiological phenomena that occur in the preparation for hibernation. Steroid hormones are known to regulate oviductal development. Cholesterol synthesis and steroidogenesis may play an important role in the expansion of the oviduct before hibernation. In this study, we investigated the expression patterns of the markers that are involved in the de novo steroid synthesis pathway in the oviduct of R. dybowskii during prespawning and prehibernation. According to histological analysis, the oviduct of R. dybowskii contains epithelial cells, glandular cells, and tubule lumens. During prehibernation, oviductal pipe diameter and weight were significantly larger than during prespawning. 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGCR), low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), cytochrome P450 cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme (P450scc), and steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1) were detected in epithelial cells in prehibernation and glandular cells during prespawning. HMGCR, LDLR, StAR, and P450scc protein expression levels were higher in prehibernation than during prespawning, but the SF-1 protein expression level did not significantly differ. HMGCR, LDLR, StAR, P450scc (CYP11A1), and SF-1 (NR5A1) mRNA expression levels were significantly higher in prehibernation compared with prespawning. The transcriptome results showed that the steroid synthesis pathway was highly expressed during prehibernation. Existing results indicate that the oviduct is able to synthesize steroid hormones using cholesterol, and that steroid hormones may affect the oviductal functions of R. dybowskii.

RESUMO

Good appearance throughout the year is important for perennial ornamental plants used for rooftop greenery. However, the methods for evaluating appearance throughout the year, such as plant color and growth activity, are not well understood. In this study, evergreen and winter-dormant parents of Phedimus takesimensis and 94 F1 plants were used for multispectral imaging. We took 16 multispectral image measurements from March 2019 to April 2020 and used them to calculate 15 vegetation indices and the area of plant cover. QTL analysis was also performed. Traits such as the area of plant cover and vegetation indices related to biomass were high during spring and summer (growth period), whereas vegetation indices related to anthocyanins were high in winter (dormancy period). According to the PCA, changes in the intensity of light reflected from the plants at different wavelengths over the course of a year were consistent with the changes in plant color and growth activity. Seven QTLs were found to be associated with major seasonal growth changes. This approach, which monitors not only at a single point in time but also over time, can reveal morphological changes during growth, senescence, and dormancy throughout the year.

RESUMO

Organic mercury, inorganic mercury and total mercury concentrations in phytoplankton (<0.1 mm) and zooplankton (>0.1 mm) collected in Kagoshima Bay, Japan were measured from 2017 to 2019 to estimate the impact of mercury discharged from submarine volcanoes on ecosystems; submarine volcanic activity continues at a depth of 200 m in the inner part of Kagoshima Bay. The total mercury concentrations in phyto- and zooplankton collected by vertical hauling at 0-200 m at just above the submarine volcano were in the range of 0.11-2.0 mg kg-1 (avg. 0.67 mg kg-1) and 0.090-0.56 mg kg-1 (avg. 0.21 mg kg-1), respectively. These values were one order of magnitude higher than the values in plankton collected in the central part of Kagoshima Bay. Organic mercury concentrations in phyto- and zooplankton were <0.010-0.071 mg kg-1 (avg. 0.028 mg kg-1) and 0.012-0.25 mg kg-1 (avg. 0.10 mg kg-1), respectively, for the inner part, and <0.010-0.040 mg kg-1 (avg. 0.010 mg kg-1) and <0.010-0.025 mg kg-1 (avg. 0.012 mg kg-1), respectively, for the central part. The values obtained in the inner part of the bay increased in summer and decreased in winter, which was consistent with changes in seawater mercury concentrations affected by volcanic activity. The organic mercury concentration in zooplankton collected just above the submarine volcano showed a size dependency, and a higher value was observed in the larger size, which suggested that the discharged mercury from the volcano was absorbed and concentrated through the ecosystem.

RESUMO

An extensive water level survey of the water-table aquifer (i.e., shallow aquifer) within Shelby County, Tennessee, was conducted in the dry (fall 2020) and wet (spring 2021) seasons. Water-table surfaces were generated using cokriging to observe seasonal differences to identify anomalous water-table depressions, indicative of an underlying aquitard breach. Seasonal differences were attributed to non-coincident control and timing between the surveys and when optimum dry (fall) and wet (spring) conditions existed, as observed through comparisons with continuous historical water levels from 12 shallow monitoring wells. Additionally, data from fall 2020 were compared to previous studies in 2005 and 2015 to determine decadal changes in levels and shape of the water-table surface which were mostly attributed to changes in data control and potential climate variations. A prediction error map was generated from the 2020 dataset to identify areas of the county with high-prediction error (>7.0 m) to offer guidance on where future well control would be optimal.

RESUMO

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread pollutants that can influence microorganisms. To unveil the effects of PFAS in natural microecosystems, a study that focused on the bacterial, fungal, and microeukaryotic communities around the PFAS point source was conducted in China. A total of 255 specific taxa were significantly different between the upstream and downstream samples, 54 of which were directly correlated with PFAS concentration. Stenotrophomonas (99.2 %), Ralstonia (90.7 %), Phoma (21.9 %), and Alternaria (97.6 %) were the dominant genera in sediment samples from the downstream communities. In addition, most of the dominant taxa were significantly correlated with PFAS concentration. Furthermore, the type of microorganism (bacteria, fungi, and microeukaryotes) and habitat (sediment or pelagic) also influence the microbial community responses to PFAS exposure. Pelagic microorganisms featured more PFAS-correlated biomarker taxa (36 pelagic microeukaryotic biomarkers and 8 pelagic bacteria biomarkers) than the sediments (9 sediment fungi biomarkers and 5 sediment bacteria biomarker). In general, around the factory, the microbial community was more variable in pelagic, summer, and microeukaryotic conditions than in other types. Attention needs to be paid to these variables in the future effect of PFAS on microorganisms.

RESUMO

The environmental similarity scores between source and recipient locations are essential in ballast water risk assessment (BWRA) models used to estimate the potential for non-indigenous species (NIS) introduction, survival, and establishment, and to guide management strategies aiming to minimize biodiversity loss and economic impacts. Previous BWRA models incorporate annual-scale environmental data, which may overlook seasonal variability. In this study, temporal variation in sea surface temperature and salinity data were examined at global ports, and the influence of this variation on environmental distance calculations (and corresponding risk of NIS) was examined for ballast water discharges in Canada by comparing outputs from monthly and annual scale assessments in a BWRA model. Except for some outliers in the Pacific region, the environmental distances based on monthly scale data generally become smaller in all regions, demonstrating that the model using annual decadal average environmental data to inform environmental matching can underestimate risk of NIS survival and establishment in comparison to monthly data. The results of this study suggest future evaluations incorporating the date of ballast water uptake and discharge can provide a more sensitive assessment of risk reflecting seasonal variability compared to an annual average risk model.

RESUMO

To understand the effect of seasonal variations on soil microbial communities in a forested wetland ecotone, here, we investigated the dynamics of the diversities and functions of both soil bacterial and fungal communities inhabiting three wetland types (forested wetland, shrub wetland and herbaceous vegetation wetland) from forest-wetland ecotone of northern Xiaoxing'an Mountains spanning different seasons. ß-diversity of soil microbial communities varied significantly among different vegetation types (Betula platyphylla-Larix gmelinii, Alnus sibirica, Betula ovalifolia, and Carex schmidtii wetlands). We totally detected 34 fungal and 14 bacterial indicator taxa among distinctive groups by using Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis, and identified nine network hubs as the most important nodes detected in whole fungi, bacteria, and fungi-bacteria networks. At the vegetation type-level, bacterial and fungal microbiome living in C. schmidtii wetland soil possessed fewer positive interactions and lower modularity than those in other types of wetland soil. Furthermore, we also discovered that ectomycorrhizal fungi were dominant in the fungal microbiota existing in forested and shrub wetland soils, whereas arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were predominated in those residing in herbaceous vegetation wetland soil. The distribution of the predicted bacterial functional enzymes also obviously varied among different vegetation-types. In addition, the correlation analysis further revealed that the key fungal network modules were significantly affected by the contents of total N and soil water-soluble K, whereas most of the bacterial network modules were remarkably positively driven by the contents of total N, soil water-soluble K, Mg and Na. Our study suggested that vegetation type are substantive factors controlling the diversity, composition and functional group of soil microbiomes from forest-wetland ecotone of northern Xiaoxing'an Mountains.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate (1) if there are differences in training load and intensity between the different training days within a microcycle and (2) if training load and intensity within the different training days are stable over the course of a season. Data were collected over a full season from a team in the women's premier division in Norway. External load (total distance, high-speed-running distance, sprint distance, and the combined number of accelerations and decelerations [ACCDEC]) was assessed using a 10-Hz GPS system with a built-in accelerometer. Internal load was assessed through session rating of perceived exertion, which was multiplied with session duration (session rating of perceived exertion-load). Training days were classified in relation to their proximity to the upcoming match day (MD): MD - 4, MD - 3, MD - 2, and MD - 1. Contents on these days were standardized according to a weekly periodization model followed by the coaching staff. Differences between training days were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects model. All training days were significantly different from each other across multiple variables. ACCDEC values were highest on MD - 4 (147.5 [13.0] ACCDEC count), and all distance variables were highest on MD - 3. All measures of training load were significantly reduced from MD - 3 to MD - 2 (effect size [ES] = 1.0-4.1) and from MD - 2 to MD - 1 (ES = 1.6-4.3). A significant negative effect across the season was observed for session rating of perceived exertion-load and ACCDEC (ES = 0.8-2.1). These results provide evidence that elite female football teams can be successful in differentiating training load between training days when implementing a weekly periodization approach.

RESUMO

Understanding seasonal groundwater quality changes in temperate continental climate waste rock dumps (WRDs) is necessary for sustainable environmental risk prevention and legacy mine contamination management. Therefore, we conducted a field investigation of a WRD to determine the mechanisms controlling its groundwater quality dynamics. The research aimed to understand the impact of seasonal changes on heavy metals released from the WRD. Three monitoring wells were installed in the WRD to investigate the pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and groundwater level (GL). The mineral composition of the waste rock was determined. Groundwater and river water samples from the monitoring wells and rivers surrounding the WRD were collected for chemical analysis. The sphalerite and galena concentrated in the WRD were assumed to be the main sources of Zn, Pb, and Cd contamination. Summer rainfall was the dominant recharge source of river water, which rapidly infiltrated to the WRD, altering the pH, EC, and GL of the groundwater. The pH, EC, and GL were stable in winter because snowpack covering the surface soil prevented groundwater recharge to the WRD. However, snow melting affected the pH, EC, and GL in the WRD. The sources of groundwater recharge (rainfall, river water, and snowmelt) altered the behaviour of the heavy metals in the WRD through two main mechanisms: the dissolution of sulphide minerals and efflorescent salts upon contact with the recharge water, and the dilution effect of the recharge water, which mixes with the groundwater in the WRD, reducing the heavy metal concentration. Sulphide mineral and efflorescent salt dissolution were significant in the deepest monitoring well and rainfall was the dominant recharge source which increased sulphide mineral and efflorescent salt dissolution in the WRD.

RESUMO

Methane (CH4) is steadily increasing in the atmosphere from different sources including wetlands. However, there is limited landscape level CH4 flux data in deltaic coastal systems where the availability of freshwater is impacted by the combined effect of climate change and anthropogenic impacts. Here we determine potential CH4 fluxes in oligohaline wetlands and benthic sediments in the Mississippi River Delta Plain (MRDP), which is undergoing the highest rate of wetland loss and most extensive hydrological wetland restoration in North America. We evaluate potential CH4 fluxes in two contrasting deltaic systems, one undergoing sediment accretion as result of a freshwater and sediment diversions (Wax Lake Delta, WLD), and one experiencing net land loss (Barataria-Lake Cataouatche, BLC). Short- (<4 days) and long-term (36 days) incubations using soil and sediment intact cores and slurries were performed at different temperatures representing seasonal differences (10, 20, 30 °C). Our study revealed that all habitats were net sources of atmospheric CH4 in all seasons, and CH4 fluxes were generally the highest for the 20 °C incubation. The CH4 flux was higher in the marsh habitat of the recently formed delta system (WLD) with total carbon content of 5-24 mg C cm-3 compared to the marsh habitat in BLC, which had high soil carbon content of 67-213 mg C cm-3. This suggests that the quantity of soil organic matter might not be a determining factor in CH4 flux. Overall, benthic habitats were found to have the lowest CH4 fluxes indicating that projected future conversions of marshes to open water in this region will impact the total wetland CH4 emission, although the overall contribution of such conversions to the regional and global carbon budgets is still unknown. Further research is needed to expand the CH4 flux studies by simultaneously using several methods across different wetland habitats.

RESUMO

Confluent and reticulated papillomatosis (CRP) is a rare skin disorder that develops in young adults and presents as persistent brown papules and plaques predominantly affecting the intertriginous areas, however, its etiopathogenesis remains elusive. Herein, we report a probable case of CRP with lesional hypohidrosis as detected by sweat test and provide insight into the pathomechanism. A 23-year-old man presented with nine-months history of painful sensation on his trunk without any skin change. The result of sweat test was compatible with acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis. Topical heparinoid and physical exercise improved the symptoms. However, he started to notice asymptomatic brownish reticulated macules on the trunk. Intriguingly, focal hypohidrosis, as detected by sweat test was evident on the macules. In histology, the lesional skin demonstrated hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, basal melanosis, mild papillomatosis, and obstruction of the sweat duct in the upper dermis, which were not observed in the peri-lesional skin. Accumulation of the sweat in the luminal aspect of the secretory portion and dilation of the sweat duct in the deeper dermis was detected in the lesional skin, as highlighted by anti-dermcidin staining. Aquaporin 5 expression in the secretory portion was more confined to the cell membrane in the lesional skin. Both brownish macules and lesional hypohidrosis simultaneously improved in summer and exacerbated in winter. Literature review found nine reports on recurrent CRP, and obesity was thought to be a major comorbidity in recurrent CRP cases. Obesity is often associated with sweat dysregulation. This, together with the findings in our case, implied the possible contribution of focal sweating abnormality in the pathogenesis of reticulated skin lesion in our case.

RESUMO

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are an emerging issue for drinking water safety. However, the seasonal variation of ARGs in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) is still unclear. This work revealed the tempo-spatial changes of microbial community, ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs) co-occurring with ARGs, ARG hosts in DWDS bulk water by means of metagenome assembly. The microbial community and antibiotic resistome varied with sampling season and site. Temperature, ammonia, chlorite and total plate count (TPC) drove the variations of microbial community structure. Moreover, environmental parameters (total organic carbon (TOC), chlorite, TPC and hardness) shifted antibiotic resistome. ARGs and MGEs co-occurring with ARGs showed higher relative abundance in summer and autumn, which might be attributed to detached pipe biofilm. In particular, ARG-bacitracin and plasmid were the predominant ARG and MGE, respectively. ARG hosts changed with season and site and were more diverse in summer and autumn. In winter and spring, Limnohabitans and Mycobacterium were the major ARG hosts as well as the dominant genera in microbial community. In addition, in summer and autumn, high relative abundance of Achromobacter and Stenotrophomonas were the hosts harboring many kinds of ARGs and MGEs at site in a residential zone (0.4 km from the water treatment plant). Compared with MGEs, microbial community had a greater contribution to the variation of antibiotic resistome. This work gives new insights into the dynamics of ARGs in full-scale DWDS and the underlying factors.

Abstract Introduction: The North Pacific of Costa Rica is a diverse and productive region; however, we have a poor understanding of the status of marine resources and fisheries dynamics, particularly for the artisanal fishery in the Gulf of Santa Elena, one of the main fishing grounds of the area. Objective: To characterize the dynamics of this fishery. Methods: We analyzed data collected by the Instituto Costarricense de Pesca y Acuicultura, and sales invoices from landing sites for the period 2010-2019. Results: There was high variation in the landed biomass, however, total catch per unit effort (CPUE; kg/day) and of the main targeted species did not decrease significantly. Overall, there was a lower CPUE in upwelling months (December-April). For the 42 commercial species reported, most biomass was from the spotted rose snapper (Lutjanus guttatus; 22 % of biomass), the Pacific red snapper (L. peru; 18 %), groupers (Epinephelus spp.; 15 %) and octopuses (Octopus spp., 13 %). Conclusions: CPUE at Santa Elena has not declined significantly from 2010 to 2019, but it falls in the upwelling season.

RESUMO

Species richness is a key ecological characteristic that influences numerous ecosystem functions. Here we analyse the patterns and possible causes of phytoplankton taxon richness in seasonal datasets from twenty contrasting lakes in the English Lake District over six years and near-weekly datasets over 33 years from Windermere. Taxon richness was lowest in winter and highest in summer or autumn in all of the lakes. Observed richness was very similar to richness estimated from coverage and sampling effort, implying that it closely reflected true seasonal patterns. Summer populations were dominated by Chlorophyta and functional groups X1, F, N and P (sensu Reynolds). In Windermere, weekly taxon richness was strongly positively correlated with surface water temperature, as was the number of functional groups and the number of taxa per functional group. Turnover in richness of taxa and functional groups were positively correlated and both were related to surface temperature. This suggests that high taxon richness in summer is linked to higher water temperature, promoting a turnover in richness of taxa and functional groups in these lakes. However, since the number of taxa per unit concentration of chlorophyll a decreased with increasing concentration of chlorophyll a, competition might occur when abundance is high.

RESUMO

This study investigated seasonal microplastics (MPs) pollution characteristics in oysters and surrounding surface seawater from five aquaculture farms located at the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. MPs abundances in oysters were 2.40 ± 0.14 (winter) to 3.28 ± 0.19 (autumn) items/individual, and 0.22 ± 0.02 (spring) to 0.45 ± 0.06 (summer) items/g (ww). In surface seawater, average seasonal MPs abundances were 3.41 ± 1.06-8.86 ± 2.48 items/L. Fibers were dominant shape, and cellophane and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were dominant polymers in oysters and surface seawater. Positive correlation was found between oysters' MPs abundance (items/individual) and environmental factors (NO2-N (r = 0.466), and temperature (r = 0.485)) by Spearman correlation analysis in four seasons. Main environmental factor affecting seasonal MPs abundance of oysters and surface seawater was NH3-N and SiO3-Si in summer and winter respectively. In conclusion, seasonal change of MPs uptake in cultured oysters was relatively small.

RESUMO

We studied the feeding strategies of savanna chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) at Nguye in Ugalla, Western Tanzania (05°13'S, 30°28'E). Among the driest most open chimpanzee habitats, Ugalla is covered mainly by woodlands. We analysed undigested contents in chimpanzee faeces, and conducted a vegetation survey and a 1-year phenology survey every 2 weeks. The fruits of some trees with the highest biomass had high appearance rates in faeces (e.g. Parinari curatellifolia and Diplorhynchus condylocarpon). Herbaceous Aframomum mala fruits grew in large patches in savanna woodland near forest edges along rivers and had the highest appearance frequency over the longest seasonal period in faeces. Other species with higher appearance rates in faeces for long seasonal periods included Grewia mollis at the forest edge and Thespesia garckeana growing on termite mounds at the forest edge. These two tree species had low biomass. Thus, savanna chimpanzees fed on some tree foods with higher biomass, herbaceous fruits instead of scarcer tree fruits, and fruits at forest edges and in forests which occupy a small portion of the study area, in addition to woodlands which occupy a large proportion. The forest edge and interior run continuously for long distances along rivers. Forest occupies 2% of this area, but chimpanzees can continuously obtain food by moving along riverine forest. To compensate for fruit scarcity in the non-fruiting (early rainy) season, chimpanzees ate fibrous, low-quality plant parts. Chimpanzees formed smaller parties when ripe fruits and unripe legumes were scarcer. Using these feeding strategies, chimpanzees adapted to savanna woodlands.

RESUMO

Swinhoe's tree lizard (Diploderma swinhonis: D. swinhonis) is an arboreal agamid that is native to Taiwan. In Taiwan, the lizard is considered to be a generalist that feeds primarily on ants and a diversity of small insect prey by employing an opportunistic sit-and-wait foraging strategy. In Japan, D. swinhonis is considered as an invasive alien species that was discovered in Hyuga city, Miyazaki Prefecture, in 2016. Despite concerns about the impact of D. swinhonis on native fauna, little information about the diet of this alien species has been published to date. This study, therefore, investigated the feeding ecology of D. swinhonis in Hyuga city to evaluate their potential impact on the ecosystem. Specifically, prey preference was investigated by examining the stomach contents of males, females, and juveniles captured from April to December 2020 and in March 2021. The results showed that the lizards in Hyuga preyed upon a wide variety of invertebrates as in Taiwan, while ants accounted for the largest proportion of the prey items consumed regardless of sex, age or changes in season. These findings indicated that D. swinhonis might cause a decrease in the abundance of the native insect fauna of Hyuga city or competition with native lizards for foods in Hyuga city. Since its impact is not currently apparent, it's necessary to monitor its effect in the future.
